Osteopathic Medicine

Founded by Andrew Taylor (A.T.) Still in 1874 who pioneered the concept of “wellness" which approaches the treatment of illness within the context of the whole body.  He worked as a physician under his father and served as surgeon in the Union Army during the Civil War.  Following the death of three of his children from spinal meningitis, he concluded that the practices of medicine were ineffective and sometimes harmful.  Osteopathic Medicine places importance on the musculoskeletal system in health and disease.  The body can be helped into healing itself OMM).  Preventative Treatment is another important aspect of Osteopathic care.

What is Pre-SOMA?

"Pre-SOMA is the undergraduate division of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) , a national organization of students pursing a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree.  Pre-SOMA is a way for pre-medical students to become a part of this community before getting into medical school.  It’s a way to help decide if osteopathic medicine is for you. Membership is free!

National Pre-SOMA works hard to promote Osteopathic medicine, increase the number of applicants to Osteopathic medical schools, support aspiring Osteopathic physicians at all levels of education, and continue the proud legacy of Osteopathic Medicine. The Pre-SOMA Website is your place for more information on how you can get involved in osteopathic medicine as a Pre-Medical student!  This is your place to learn about osteopathic medicine, keep up to date with upcoming Pre-SOMA events, and a chance to interact directly with current osteopathic medical students."
